FREE FALLIN’ - TOM PETTY

Beginner’s Course Grade 2, Module 8

A classic tune by the late great Tom Petty. This is another fun-to-play song for which the chords can be simplified. The chords that are used here are likely to be the chords that Tom uses in the original recording. But there is a lot of guitar layering going on so the strumming focuses on the dominant rhythm that seems to come through. This version uses a capo at the third fret, so all chord positions are with reference to the third fret. You can also play it with a capo at the first fret, but you will need to change the D, Gsus2, and Asus4 chords to E, Asus2, and a B power chord (X24400), referenced to the capo position. In fact, I believe this is a layer on the original recording, but doesn’t become evident until later in the track. The rhythm stays exactly the same regardless of capo position.

Chords:

The song starts with a D chord, but then your second finger should move to the low E string third fret, and add your pinky to the high E string third fret to complete the Gsus2 chord. Your first and third fingers become pivot points. Then move your second finger to the D string second fret, while removing your pinky. This is an Asus4 chord that is not being with conventional fingering, but for this song, this should make your life a little easier (once you are used to it) as your first and third fingers can continue being pivot points.
