A GIRL LIKE YOU - EDWYN COLLINS

Beginner’s Course Grade 1, Module 4

This is a really great song for working on Am, Dm and Em chord grips. To help achieve that this version of the song uses a capo at the third fret, so all the chords are referenced to that, their usual position but moved three frets up. This allows you to play this simplified version of the song to the original recording, which is a great way to practice this song. I’ve suggested some strumming patterns below but the most important thing is to get the chords down, for which I recommend simple down strums to begin with.

A Girl Like You

Chords:

For these chord grips use a capo at the third fret. The authentic version of this song uses barre chords, Cm played at the 8th fret, an Fm barre chord also played at the 8th fret and a Gm barre chord played at the 10th fret. You will also need a capo at the third fret for those barre chords.

The chord progression is 1 bar of Am, 2 beats Dm, 2 beats Em, 1 bar of Am, 2 beats Dm, 2 beats Am. But there are a couple of areas where it differs. This is where he sings “Well I’ve      never met a girl like      you be     fore” where he switches from Dm to Am rather than Dm to Em.

Instead of playing a chord sequence during the solos you can also develop the song further and introduce lead solos, which is essentially a Cm pentatonic scale with one additional note:
