WONDERFUL TONIGHT - ERIC CLAPTON

Beginner’s Course Grade 1, Module 6

This is an all time classic song and one that is great fun to play. This is a chord version of the song, although eventually I will upload an arpeggiated version as well. I’ve included several embellishments as this is an ideal song for beginners, but which can be expanded on as your skills increase.

The verses, bridge and second instrumental break include a D/F# chord. If you are a beginner feel free to substitute this with a regular D chord, but as you advance you may also wish to add this in, The chord boxes include the version of D/F# that requires your thumb on the F# note. My course also includes a way to play that note with a finger, which some people find easier.

Strumming Pattern:

Lyrics and Chords:

Embellishments:

1.      On the first strum in each bar focus the pick on the bass strings. On the other strums, focus the pick more on the treble strings.

2. Walkup 1 is two notes, open A string and then A string second fret. Walkup 3 is the same as Walkup 1.

3.     At the end of verse 2 you have two options. Either play 2 bars of G and then go straight into the bridge starting with the C chord or play a walkup that consists of two notes, 6th string 3rd fret and 5th string open. If you choose to do the walkup just play a single bar of G and then add those two notes.

4.      In the instrumental break 2, to play the D chord move the C up two frets for a more melodic version, so the D chord becomes X54030.

5. Another strumming pattern that I like is DDU UDU, which I think is more in line with the melody.
